Need some directions on a Stevie Ray Vaughn type of sound

There are a ton in that vein. Basically what you're looking for is a Fender Blackface/Dumble-type clean. Try Two-Rock, Redplate, any of the Dumble clones, and the Fender Vibroverb (one of SRV's go-to amps). A bunch of other Fender profiles will get you there, too, but with a little tweaking. Also, a Strat with single coils is pretty important, too. Happy searching.
