Alternative/ MP3 phone input sounds bad

would like to be able to utilize this input for playing along with songs but it sounds thin and tinny always. If I plug directly into my dxr10 its normal with same volume settings. In output I see and turn up headphone volume but sounds bad from 1-10 space is not on main volume seems to have zero affect on this screen regardless of which return input? What am I missing ?
