Do a Rig Exchange or Rig MAnager search for Avalon - I think you may be pleasantly surprised

Wait a second...are you saying I can use my Kemper as a mic preamp for vocal recordings simulating a $2000 Avalon mic preamp??? Why didn't I know this! Please tell me how to go about? Connect mic obviously directly to the Kemper, load for example the Avalon VT 737 SP profile in rig manager and then good to go??????? That easy?

The profile would be an accurate representation of the Avalon's settings for gain and EQ when it was profiled. You also could adjust the gain in the KPA, use the KPA's EQs, compressor, etc. If you are not recording "dry".

So I was correct in my post? Just hook the mic to the Kemper and I'm good to go?

I did it with an API 512 and it performed well IMHO

You likely need an XLR to 1/4" adapter for the microphone, so you can plug it into the KPA Imput.
-
I think I have an adapter. I will give it a try. This is awesome. So basically this means I can get rid of my Pre 73 Golden age preamp to save some space.

Try profiling your favorites settings with the Pre73 - from the reviews, they may be great profiles to share

So should I hook up the mic to the front of the kemper? Because the volume is VERY low. I can barely hear myself.
-
A dynamic mic should work well - but, a condenser mic would not work without a power supply.
-
Hm tried a Shure SM58 which is dynamic but same thing. Signal is extremly low.
-
Is your adapter XLR to Mono 1/4"?
If it has a Stereo 1/4, that may be the problem - the KPA has an unbalanced input (and likely some hardware switching to disable the rear input).
-
Couldn't you use the XLR retur input when recording??
-
I never used an adapter. I have a cable XLR to 1/4. Not sure if it is stereo or mono. Is it possible to tell somehow?
I tried using the XLR return input but it was pretty much the same. Extremly low signal. -
Mics have a very low output signal, most of the inexpensive adaptor cables don't have transformers in them to boost them up to a level that would be sufficient for the instrument level input the Kemper is designed for.

Ok, so back to using mixer or micpreamp?
