Politics and religion never work well in forums where there is a great amount of diversity amongst the membership, but other than that an off-topic area would really add to the sense of "community" here. There are people from all over the world posting here regularly, and it would be really interesting to get to know everybody a little better.

Yes, I'm pretty sure based on observations on multiple forums AND as a former moderator on a large, well known guitar site. What happens is the bickering starts in the "problem" thread, and often times it will spill over into the rest of the forum. This is why a vast majority of gear sites have a blanket "no politics or religion" stance-it prevents problems from starting in the first place.
