The ones he was looking at Thomann are PCI Audiowire cards like MOTU and RME... Not just Firewire. At 300€ are about the cheapest you can find, mostly they hover between 1000€ and 2500€. That's Pro studio equipment.

What you want to search for, is a regular Firewire 400 card which fits in one of the slots of your mainboard. This could be either PCI or PCIe.
Don't buy a Firewire 800 card, all the Firewire audio interfaces are Firewire 400.
Don't buy the cheapest no-name product. Get some quality from a well known manufacturer you can trust (driver support, good electronic components, good controller).
Don't buy a combined Firewire/USB card. They would obviously share the same slot und wouldn't run 100% independent.I think you should be able to find something between 25 and 40 Euro easily.

I believe rme has the lowest latency. Sometimes this is important for the vst.

Presonus has a few options too - firestudio and audiobox for firewire and usb respectively.

Can you explain how you make the connections from the Kmper into the Presonus AudioBox please?
Thanks
