I just listen to your music, pretty cool… You’re singer sounds like John Corabi.
OK, help me out… Give me two songs in your YouTube videos, one that is real drums and one that is not… And then I will see if I can tell… I have listened to them a few times, and they all sound great!
What's the secret setting?

OK, help me out… Give me two songs in your YouTube videos, one that is real drums and one that is not… And then I will see if I can tell… I have listened to them a few times, and they all sound great!Thank you so much! Tell ya what, a new one will be finished with mixing in about an hour (I hope) I will give you that and one other one you have probably heard. So give me a little bit. I like these games, reminds me of the shootouts on Gearslutz, except none of us are screaming at each other lol. Some of the Slate shootouts get people angry, WHY? I have no idea. Thank you again for the compliments, I really do appreciate it!

It depends on who's doing the programming and who's playing the drums. Many records used programmed drums, I remember "Momentary lapse of reason" by pink Floyd had all programmed drums, maybe due to the lapse of reason thing.

Sweet!! Let the games begin!

The reason I am waiting for this new tune to be done is that i think it is the best one to match up with one of our older ones, more fair.I think there is a chance you will guess what one is real, My point was, in the end it does not matter and can sound pretty damn close. Ill be back. lets do a compressor shootout next. I am pretty good at those, Real Neve comp? or Plugin? This would be a nice place to do that stuff, people are more friendly here than over on GS

The whole band is me and my singer..lol He lives 1000 miles away. Technology is great for this! I have never heard of John Corabi before

Ok, one is a real kit, one is not. May not be the greatest songs, but will work for this.

Here is a good example of John Corabi.
Was in Motley Crue for one CD, which is still the one I think is outstanding… But what do I know... -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO7DGG9Oou4Great tracks, @Jarrydee, I really liked them.
For sure, programmed drums can sound better. The samples are created in excellent studios. But in terms of performance, drums that are really played have more feel to them.
I am not sure which of your tracks is the real drum and the fake drum either. Both sound great.
-
Why would you program drums anyway? EZDrummer and Superior Drummer feature great groove libraries filled with MIDI grooves played on edrums by real drummers. So you get the feel of the "real drummer" with the sound of your favourite library. There are so many MIDI groove libraires that can be integrated...
-
I've heard tracks where the drums were so quantised, sample replaced and compressed to hell and back that it didn't matter anymore that there was a real drummer involved in any way.
Then again I'm a big fan of drum synths (as in: not sample based drum machines) and if done properly and tastefully any approach is viable.
anyway, enough drum talk back to topic.
Although:
There is no secret, just good choices. -

I PLAY them because the groves are not always what fits the song. They do have great loops in those programs, but as a drummer, there are things you want to accent in the songs that is not part of the loop. I find it easier just to play the things through the song with my hands than to search for loops

Thank you! YES, I would love to play the real kit on every song, it is what is natural to me. You were right, you can not beat a real kit, if not for sound, for the feel!

There is no secret, just good choices. This is totally it, @DonPetersen. Now just think of a programmed track which is just locked to a grid. Yuck!

Exactly, Tyler. And if you examine those grooves closely, you'll realise they are not locked to a grid, not by a long shot.Locking to a grid kills the feel.
Here is a track I did today (my off day, yay!) where I played the drums and everything else. Just feel the vibe and the interaction between instruments (hope I'm not tooting my own horn, apologies, I offered to play on other people's tracks)

But programmed drums don't have to be locked to a grid

Please refer Don Petersen's post re: drums quantised so much they shouldn't have bothered -

Hey man, I really dig that!! Good job

My secret setting is Cabinet Character at +5. On some rigs, in a band practice context, it feels sort of like EQing down the low bass frequencies for clarity.
