have you tried the clapton twin profiles from the rig exchange?
It looked like he had the selector switch in the bridge position, but it was a fat midrangey sound. So, he probably had at least some of the mid boost turned up on the guitar. Guitars with that circuit in them have a different way of driving amps, than passive strats, even when the knob is at "0".
I think there is an old thread where someone (Don Peterson, maybe) described how to add that kind of sound as a Stomp.

Old Jackson circuit tried to emulate Claptons tone in 1986 with their JE-1200. Those are dirtcheap on ebay and was standard for all charvels from 1986-1991. And some Jacksons, also imports in the same era. Fender have a released version of the clapton midboost but it is quite rare and more expensive.
All these works best for songle coils, but could do humbuckers both active and passive. 6db boost on mid gain.
