Midi Captain STD controller with Kemper Player

  • I think this is also a problem with bidirectional communication. Dr. Wilson can fully implement it through programming, but the significance of doing so is not significant and may affect the operation of the system

Kemper did not actively send status information outward. If midicaptain sends requests to Kemper on a scheduled basis, the massive data flow will consume a lot of system resources

So, it's not wise to do this

Moreover, at midiCaptain's current pricing, there is no reason for it to do so much, is there? Haha

    that makes sense, AppleTreeChen

You are correct- where the big kempers can send midi upon the Kemper parameters being changed the smaller player does not do this so, yes, it would need the midicaptain to continuously request data to look for changes which is not good. I assume from what you have already said, when the midi captain sends a program change message it also requests the preset/slot name via sysex (as we discussed in another thread: Player extended midi control demo and how to show slot-names)

Another similar solution would be for the midi captain buttons to send slot-number changes (rather than a midi-program number) and the bank up/down sends bank change messages (again opposed to program-change messages) Upon each slot-change message it would therefore request the name of the chosen bank, either chosen on the midi-captain or the Kemper player and calculate the bank+slot number on the available data. This would be a far more efficient approach and account for any changes made on either device with the added benefit of only send midi data on those occasions.

Again, slightly more complex but it appears the developer is committed to making this the best product possible.

    Just sharing my thoughts.

Alternatively, the option for the user to choose between having buttons assigned to the instant access controls (slot A, B, Del, Rev) or alternatively instant bank up/down would be a more practical live solution. It is great the standard mode allows us to choose the functionality of each and every button making it a very flexible unit. Again, some compromises (extra programming) involved.

Is there anyway to be involved with the development of the midi-captain, especially with the Kemper-related features?

You AppleTreeChen seem to have a close and inside relationship with Mr Wilson and i appreciate your input and support with all of this.

Thanks! Your idea and proposal is very professional and that is the general direction of my thinking. i am not sure about Mr. WILSON's idea, he is an expert in the field, but it is a very good idea and i think there is value in relaying it to him.

As stated before, I am just a user and enthusiast, and have not been involved in the development of MidiCaptain, and I even just got my MidiCaptain the other day.

I purchased the KPA many years ago, and have owned the HxStomp and Booss Gt1000core as well as a few other brands of equipment, and it's not hard to see that I've been exposed to more portable equipment, so I've always thought more about the use of midi commands to solve the trouble , and I like to learn a little bit about it as well.

Mr. WILSON is very busy, he has a lot of product development and business issues to deal with. He is willing to communicate with users, if you have a good enough idea, and have the corresponding theoretical basis, it is best to also provide some technical means, the ability to do some technical verification, then he will be very positive and you interact, this is the way of communication between me and him.

  • a little demo of the new "v4 super setup" operating mode:

  • Good news, the latest version of MidiCaptain for KPP (FW_10SW_KPP_SM4.1) has implemented (LED) state synchronization between the FX module and the pedal switch, with LEDs on the switch lighting up and turning off to follow the on/off synchronized display of the FX.

thats cool. Is it now an official release, tried and tested? And where do we find this?

Can you give us a demo of it in action?

    thanks

It is the official version, I just got it yesterday

You can email WILSON to get it.

This version of the program is specifically designed for KPP and does not support navigation between multiple pages. Additionally, the parameters in page0 cannot be arbitrarily modified.

This version can achieve two-way communication with KPP via USB connection, allowing for retrieval of the current RIG name and module status of KPP. The specific button functions are as follows:

Button 1: SlotA switch (temporarily unable to distinguish whether SlotA contains effect modules)

Button 2: SlotB switch (temporarily unable to distinguish whether SlotB contains effect modules)

Button 3: Slot DLY switch (temporarily unable to distinguish whether SlotD contains effect modules)

Button 4: Slot REV switch (temporarily unable to distinguish whether SlotR contains effect modules)

Button Up: short press for Tap, long press for Tuner

Button A: short press to locate current group RIG 1, long press for current group number -1

Button B: locate current group RIG 2

Button C: locate current group RIG 3

Button D: locate current group RIG 4

Button Down: short press to locate current group RIG 5, long press for current group number +1

    Currently unresolved issues:

    1. temporarily unable to distinguish whether Slot contains effect modules.this problem is my judgment is part of the KPP preset rig file itself, some show empty FX modules, through the sysEX command query, it will feedback that there are loaded modules (does not work in the effect chain)

    2. tap rate on pedal is affected after long press to invoke tuner

Sounds interesting. Thanks for the info.

I am using mine for a fly-gig this weekend so not ready to try any updates leading up to a show.

I did point out to Mr Wilson that users may need quicker access between banks so the long-press up/down may not be a practical solution when wishing to jump banks between songs in a live situation. Home use, fine, live use not ideal. However if the ABCDE buttons choose the slot the buttons on the actual Kemper could be assigned to bank up/down for instant response.

Guessing this new mode is a user-chosen option on boot up so the user can still choose norman, geek, supersetup, etc on boot up?

    please confirm

  • No, it is not currently available.
