SPDIF problems help needed.

  • Hello all,

I just received my brand new kemper, i am actualy unable to get any sound using SPDIF. My cable is hooked to the SPDIF out of the Kemper and the SPDIF in of my RME Fireface.
Is there anything to set up inside the kemper in order to activate the SPDIF out ?
I am very unfamiliar with using SPDIF, and would request some help please. I've set up thing like follow :

  • You will need to assign the desired source in the outputmenu of the Profiler for the SPDIF output and you must use a samplingrate of 44,1 khz for your session. According to your pictures you already set the Fireface to be the sync slave which is correct.
If you just want to record the stereomix from the Profiler including all the effects simply choose Master Stereo for the SPDIF out. If you plan to do some reamping later on you should use Git/Stack which will give you the Stack signal on one of the SPDIF channels and the DI signal on the other. You would then record on two tracks and use one for reference and the other for reamping.
Once you recorded the tracks and want to do reamping you will need to select the SPDIF input in the Input menu to send the signal from the DAW to the Profiler. Of course you will also need to route that signal in your Fireface from the recorded track to the SPDIF output of the Fireface,

  • According to the Totalmix, the main output is set to -27.2, so, you can't hear sound in your speakers. Do you have feedback of signal in the SPDIF input in the 1st row of Totalmix ? If yes, just raise up the volume of the main output.

  • Thanks everyone for your help ! :D

Seems like the RME is not receiving a signal on the spdif in. It lists the current clock as "internal".

Indeed, although the clock source is set to " SPDIF Coax " , you can still see " Current Internal " on the right. :(

On my Focusrite Sapphire 6i6 routing software I have to change Internal to SPDIF in order to get the digital signal.

This is what i did, clock source is set to " SPDIF Coax ".

    1) It is a brand new " genuine " spdif cable.
    2) Double checked that, everything is hooked at the right place.
    3) Unfortunately, I'm not able to find something like that " active channel " thingie you're talking about. Could you be more specific please ? :)

Not too sure about the UFC, but on my Fireface 800, there's a section in the configuration dialog that allows you to specify which channels are active, such as only 1+8 analog, or 1-8 analog + SPDIF.

There are two possibilities I can see here if this has not been disabled:
    1) The SPDIF cable is faulty. This seems likely since the UFC is not slaving to the Kemper, which is more of a sign than the fact there is no sound.
    2) Your Kemper SPDIF output is not working. I wouldn't expect this from a new machine, but it is a possibility here.

I don't use really high end SPDIF cables with my Kemper, but they work, so I'm assuming that's the problem. Please post pictures of all the pages of your Fireface config dialog so we can see what settings you're using. Cable problem is my bet ^^

Is the green spdif led on the front of the RME blinking, solid or not
lit at all? Do you have anything else with coax spdif out, to check at
    which end the fault is?

Nope, the SPDIF led is not lit at all.

Do everything seems tuned the right way ?
Tell me if other pix are needed.

Thanks again for your help. :)

  • Hello everyone,

A friend of mine came at my home with the exact same card as mine. If i replace my card with his card, everything works flawlessly.
My spdif doesn't work at all... There must be some hardware prob around the "SPDIF in" unfortunately.

My card will be replaced soon, problem solved.
I'd like to thanks everyone again for the valuable help. ;)
    Best regards
