Clock losing time?

  • I have three computers. On my oldest machine, i had this issue.
It lost time completely, i.e. the date was 2006 sth. hour/00:00
okay, i changed the battery. nada.
i bought a pack. tried three batteries. nothing. maybe i wrecked the contact, maybe not.
while this is really annoying on a computer (firefox wont open any pages with the wrong date that way back) ...
and a pain in the a... to change it after each booting

i can surely live with it on my kemper as it is only a few minutes in 4 years, imagine you change the battery and have the same problem as me
on my old pc or even things worse could happen, so lets live with it and find swiss specialists for the KPA MK2 :D

  • No I can't live with that. Why the numbers representing seconds freeze for a moment and they later change faster? Guys this is all digital. This must have been programmed wrong.

Also unless your battery is COMPLETELY DEAD, you cannot have any malfunction in internal Real Time Clock. It must work correctly even on 0.1% of battery life.

A second is a second as long as Kemper's battery is not dead. You can't accept few minutes delay even in a year timespan.

  • Agreed with skoczy. It's not an issue in itself, but as long as it may hint at a bug or at a programming flaw, better the devs to be aware of it. They will decide whether it's critical or not :)

  • I would just like to bring the following to your attention: There are no user serviceable in Profiler and opening the housing VOIDS warranty.

Hopefully the battery lives longer than the warranty period. ;(

Does anyone know how this manifests itself when the battery is too weak.

If you see "Check Date" on Soft Button 4 permanently, the clock is not working anymore - in other words, the battery is dead. Profiler doesn't warn you when the battery is low.
The battery has only one purpose: to make Profiler remember the date and time when the unit is not switched on. Even if the battery is dead you can play a gig without issues. We use these batteries since more than a decade, the Access Virus synth use the same type. From what we can see, those hold a long while, 5-7 years are not untypical.

Typical for most computers but I have found the majority of them to last at least 7 years. RTC's are inherently not an accurate timepiece hence the the reason that operating systems check with a Time Server to update the clock on the OS and not rely on the RTC. Mine is off by 4 seconds since last night when I reset it. Not a big deal to me really, but for some maybe. As G String stated it does not impair the unit even if the battery was to die. And as stated earlier some chips may be more accurate than others, ones that don't oscillate at precisely 32.768 kHz.

  • I've been talking to tech support for awhile about an occasional glitch while turning the type knob to select effects. They had me watch the clock. The seconds speed up and slow down. I had set it once I received my kemper (2 months ago) and noticed it was off quite a bit. I also noticed that my tap tempo seemed like it would speed up and slow down. They came to the conclusion that the internal clock is malfunctioning. Supposed to send it off next week. Can't wait to get this sorted out because I am loving my Kemper!
