How do I set the Profiler as Master in a Recording Setup?

Hey Guys! I read a few times that the Kemper (when recorded via S/PDIF) has to be set as master in the recording setup. How do I do this?

I worked myself through google and a few recording pages, but the Kemper isn't even recognized by my computer as an audio-unit (otherwise i would try this), so how can I tell him to sync the other devices to it? Sorry if the question is stupid, I'm just a hobby recorder. If it matters: I work on Mac OSX with Logic 9 and the Kemper goes via S/PDIF into an Alesis iO2. The record works, but sometimes I get cracks in the audio signal and I want to check, if this has to do with the master/slave-thing.

You cannot set it inside your Kemper, you have to set your Soundcard to be the slave. The connection via s/pdif you made is correct :o) Try to find the master/slave setting in your soundcard's software.

it can also be called 'sync to "S/PDIF" ' in the mixer/setup of your audio interface.

Thank's for the help, but my soundcard doesn't have any software… it's plug&play and in the OSX-audio settings there are no options for this. Could the master/slave-settings be the reason for the cracks or would I get no sound at all, if the Kemper is not master?

The Profiler is always the master.
If the audio interface does not come with its own software you can use the audio/midi setup utility which is a part of OSX to set the clock source.
Unsynced digital systems will produce clicks in the audio signal.

Proper S/PDIF cables are 75Ohm coax cables with RCA connectors. Many people try using regular RCA audio cables which can result in problems.

Unfortunately I can’t. In the Audio-Midi-Setup the „Source of Clock“ is set fixed, I’m not allowed to change it (as shown in the Screenshots). I tried making an aggregate Device, but it still forces me to choose one of the USB-connected devices as master. Or is it possible, that the io2 also HAS to be master?

From what i read in a review the Alesis interface that you are using is fixed at 48 khz so it cannot be used with the Profiler in a digital setup anyway. I would recommend to either use it with its analog inputs or get a different interface that allows to be synced.

It's set to 48 khz in Standard, but 44,1 khz works also. If I set it to 48 khz there is no sound at all (as i would expect ), if I set it to 44,1 khz it works. And on an random basis the cracks appear. Maybe I should upgrade to a better interface… I don't want to use the analog inputs, because they eat a lot of the signal and I don't want to limit the sound of the recording in the first step

By the way - I bought a new Interface (Steinberg UR28M) and now everything works perfekt. I can easily change the Master-Clock, Samplerate and everything. I can only recommend

Guys Im resurrecting tis as I have a similar issue....did you ever resolve the kemp clicking thing using SPDIF....Im also using the Q2626

This thread is five years old and S/PDIF capabilities have been significantly enhanced since then:

- several sampling rates are supported,

- newer hardware can also run in slave mode.

All you need to know is covered in the Main Manual.

Be aware that in some situations two S/PDIF cables need to be plugged between PROFILER and interface to enable audio signal in one direction and clock signal into other direction.

Burkhard maybe you should add this to the manual (i hope i didn't miss it) even if it is ovious.
