Ty Tabor sound

  • Wasn't the key to Ty Tabor's sound that he used more than one amp together at the same time ?

You might need two Kempers to pull that off....

when recording, double tracking is an important part of his sound.
Using chorus and/or reverb to give the two tracks a different sound is more important than using different profiles, IMHO.

  • I'm a huge fan of King's X. seen them more times than I can remember. In addition to what's already been mentioned, Ty has also used Yahama DG Amps, Line 6 Pod, and most recently the Randall modular system with custom made preamps and an Axe FX II. If you're hoping for classic pre-dogman tones, good luck on that! His tone back then was a combination of a Fender "Elite" super strat guitar which had single coils (with a dummy coil to hum cancel) and a midrange boost and a Lab Series L5 which was actually broken which was likely another contributor to his unique sound. Dogman he switched to rack mount Mesa pres and had the preamp from his guitar rack mounted as well so he could get the mid boost with any guitar. And yet even through switch from singles to humbuckers and radical changes in gear, he still retains a certain sound...which is all technique. One little trick you can do to get closer to his recorded solo tones is to create a copy of the track, detune and/or delay it slightly, and pan it opposite the dry track. IMHO, no profile alone will get you there as its a combination of gear, post processing, and technique to really nail it.
