Is it possible to use the Kemper Profiling Amp with other instruments successfully?

  • First let me start by saying I currently do not own the KPA as of now. Im very amazed by the technology behind this device and wanted to know, as a keyboard/synth player, am I able to run my synth/keyboard guitar out put into the Kemper to be mic'ed into my DAW? If you wonder why don't I just get a keyboard amp, its because I had an idea of tracking dual mono parts to build a false stereo image but I wanted each of the identical dual mono tracks to take on a different character by using different amp models and mics to bring contrast to my music. Im not a newbie and have a few years experience to the art of recording yet this idea in particular is something new I want to try and possibly add to my technique should it be possible to use this amp in this manor with out screwing something up.

I welcome any response that is actually helpful as most forum threads are filled with responses from people who talk about everything but what the OP was trying to find out. Information in ADDITION to my question is welcome and I would be truly grateful for it.

    Thank you in advance,

    Rodney Gabriel

  • Yes. You can run any signal source into the KP either by guitar input jack, SPDIF, or Aux Input.A. If the source is something that would sound interesting through a guitar amp, the effect should be the same. You can even turn off the amp block and use the effects alone.

  • WOW!!! This is probably the fastest forum response in history! lol Thank you very much musicman65 for answering my question and for the added tip as well. You just made me a future KPA owner. Thanks again.

  • Not sure why you would want to mic it though. Why not just go direct out from the KPA?

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

  • Hi Rodney,

like other forumites already stated, it is absolutely possible to use more than just guitar with the profiler.
I fitted a kalimba with a piezo pickup and used it with the profiler - works great!

I've been using guitar preamps with synths since the mid-90's and it's great way to take away the processed, 'synthetic' (haha) feel of of these signals and add that organic, 3D quality to them.
Using different rigs for left and right sounds like a great idea to me. The profiler goes beyond what a 'real' amp can do and parameters like definition, clarity and character will open up exciting new way to process synth based signals, while adding personality.
    Go for it! :)

  • Sorry to take this off topic but has anyone tried reamping a vocal track through the harmonizer fx? I might try it this weekend on some background vocals and play around with the pure tune and formant to see what I can get!

  • I recently played on an open air festival where the keyboarder of another band wanted to put his Fender Rhodes through my "guitar amp". But when he saw the KEMPER he was afraid. That's a pity, I would have loved to hear a Rhodes through my Kemp. Theoretically it should do well with all kinds of signals that benefit from the special sound coloration of a guitar amp. I have tested a few drum sounds...

You don`t need to mic the KEMPER - as this has already been done when you do the profiles.

When you record multiple layers you should switch the KEMPER to run in constant latency mode.

I have been away for quite a while. A few years ago I sold my KPA and since then played my own small tube amp with a Bad Cat Unleash. Now I am back because the DI-profile that I made from my amp sounds very much convincing to me.

    8o can't believe I hadn't thought of that

  • hi,
I did several tests with diverse synths and I think you got to find the right profiles since amps do not have the same tonal range : on some you might have a lack of basses for instance. Maybe with modern guitar amp&bass profiles you'll be able to get the whole range especially with amps designed for 7/8 strings instruments.

You can still disable the amp/cab and just use the effects, that are pretty good, but the same tonal range does apply , some effects are totally ineffective on a given range of frequencies (dist. for instance), obviously it will work on the 'guitar frequencies' (mids) of your synth but not on lower and upper octaves.

Check this stoner songI wrote a few month ago with Kaosillator tracks in it ( Hi gain amp , lots of gain do fatten the tone, tape delay & verb were used with the Kaos).

It might be a very good thing to get a 'synth' input/EQ setting for the KPA to allow the whole frequency range on amps, cabs & effects.

anyone also tried the KPA this way ?

  • Yeah the Rhodes on the KPA must be a killer combination. The fender rhodes specialist/tech in France lives in my neighborhood, when i visit him i always stare at the silverface fender twin (60's era, JBL speakers :D ) he uses to test his rhodes ...
The guy has a collection of amps he started in the sixties (like 40 fenders,vox,orange,marshall...) I always try to convince him to the KPA, but he's hermetic to digital stuff, I'd love to profile all his amps, that would be fantastic.

Profile his amps! Profile his amps!

He shouldn't mind, since I'm sure he's convinced the Kemper couldn't create a perfect replica... and then, it'll be too late!

    MUWAHAHAHAHA!

  • ah we are going off topic now, sorry Rodney !

The point is that this guy does rent all his amps & keyboards to the major public radio in France, he has a guy that lift the amps each and every day for the live gigs on radio. Imagine his business if all this this is replaced by a couple of KPAs, that would kill his business :(
I have to profile this silverface , this is my mission for the community, I'll probably find a way, the guy is a cool cat & also a good guitarist.
