Well I just got hold of my Album today and its completely unbelievable. Guitar tones are amazing!!!!! (I want them lol) The production is incredible too in my opinion, the best Muse album to date. I recommend getting hold of it you wont regret it. Anyway just thought I'd share my opinion just in case you didn't know it was out yet or debating weather to get it or not. Now back to listening to it nice and loud

I completely agree with every single word of your post. Musically and sonically it's brillant. Guitar is awesome but also the bass is simply fat and in your face. I too would love to see a Muse pack But I don't see that happening.
I have to say Revolt is by far my fave song, it's so well produced and parts of it sound like Queen in a really cool way.BTW I got me the Zvex Fuzz Factory and this one definetly gets you close to Matts sound

Yes i hear Queen in that song too. I also hear some Def Leppard Hysteria in this album but thats no wonder since Mutt Lange produced it. I cant stop listening to it at the moment.
Maybe you could share some profiles of the Fuzz Factory
Maybe a Muse pack might come one day, we can only hope
-
I can ask Matt for a Muse-pack after the liveshow tommorow in Holland

Yes please !!!!

It's pretty much impossible to profile the ZVEX Fuzz Factory craziness.
This is one of these stomp boxes you really want to own. -

Thats a shame -
It's because you can make the Fuzz Factory self-oscillate and generate weird feedbacks. The profiling process of the Kemper isn't capable to capture these. Of course you could profile some simple fuzz settings but Matt Bellamy's Fuzz craziness goes way beyond a regular fuzz tone.

they used the kpa or real amps ?
-
What's the difference? LOL
-

they used 11 Kempers on the live Rome DVD and I did see them recording this album and there were Kempers being used.
-
I pre-bought it on iTunes and it was cool releasing like a song a day a few times.
This band never stops playing around with new effects and ideas. Love 'em.
Them and Modest Mouse's new album are my favorites this year. Always liked how MM layers many guitar parts to make a song. All they need now is a Kemper!

Hre's fascinating article on the making of drums, the KPA is also mentioned (of course )

Thanks for sharing Koma, what a great read. I'm a massive fan of Mutt Lange and his work, that the whole article was very interesting
-
Yeah, especially the bit on the editing was fascinating. Would love to see one of their session files.
-
Yeah the amount of automation that Mutt used sounded crazy, but he knows his stuff

Thanks for sharing this! -
brilliant article, and what an achievement in terms of engineering
I guess I now understand why one would need a multi-million dollar production to achieve such levels of quality !!!
On a side note ,I was deeply surprised by the fact I somewhat used similar practices on my own noob/amateur recordings & empiric approach:
- recording a whole set of 'guide tracks' early on the recording of a song. The guide tracks serve the purpose of having a work basis for the rest, each track being overdubbed & eventually replaced . I often re-do a guitar rhythm or lead track later, it's very confortable to do this with the DAW & KPA (that solo tone sucks , the phrasing is pretty lame, let's redo this one ...)
- complex Volume and EQ automation on most tracks, instead of compression. I sometime used these features on reaper on some of my complex tracks (well I'm talking about a 8 track song and not a 128 one !!!). I've never been a fan of compression, I largely prefer natural overdrive and tube dynamics on hand play guitar parts. Compensating some parts of a solo with volume and EQ comes to mind when mixing, as well as automated panning. Mutt is maniac enough to remove every noise on EACH guitar attack & note (now this is was you can call editing!). I felt I was cheating using the same tricks on some parts of my solos, I don't feel guilty anymore
The profiling involved on Muse album features handwired 1959 marshall, 60's voxes and Diezels, Some where profiled with a simple SM57 , all these amps are readily available (some commercially) for us , this is great !!! -
just for fun : how do they record / profile their amps (you just have to swap the heads ) :

Not only but especially Muse fans will appreciate this "toy" -while the particular music style is a bit annoying to me, thisthing itself is really cool, you can put it on every guitar - check it out:
