  • Mocking sounded polished on the clean parts. I too, have a problem with the heavy guitars and think they should be set back some with just a slight high cut slope, but the riffing is killer.

BTW, I had a Grammy winning producer critique one of my songs last week. He told me I was a "wicked guitarist". Glad my wife was with me because she wouldn't have believed it. He suggested I work on mastering which I know I need to get into next. I don't mean to brag considering the exceptional and far superior talent on here, but I was so excited to hear that being a "young" guitarist. It makes me want to push harder.

  • Thanks deadman42 and BayouTexan !

Most pop music is essentially mono with just the percussion and peripheral effects taking up the stereo space. Hard panned guitars was common in 80's pop but these days more rock and metal. Originally this was because mono was all that was available, but mono came back in popularity with earbuds and improved car stereo systems, because people listen with one earbud often to hear other noises and because you don't want the passenger to get a completely different experience to the driver in the car.

In fact even in hard rock the kind of stereo you experience is often more stereo widener than dual tracked guitars these days.

There's no rules about any of this stuff, it's important to just make things sound how you want them to, if it sounds nice it is nice. Stereo guitars work well for some tracks, not so well for others. Every time you add another layer you lose impact, but gain cohesion.

  • Well said. And interestingly a good song - which is attractive and well conducted - can benefit from stereo or whatever else. But it remains a good song. Even in mono. And more sophisticated approaches like quadro or the 5.1 sound on some concert DVDs... did that really materialize as the next step and goto level? Not really. Good songs matter 8)

Awe man, what a great groove right out of the gate, nearly 70's porn style intro (in the best possible taste) Reminds me of Starsky and Hutch.
