I haven't kept up with Macbook accessories, but I know the crazy high prices and lack of upgradability certainly approach your gist!
I love both Macs and PCs. My Mac Mini is great for music stuff/email/web. My HP Z820 has loads of power for editing and motion graphics work. And linked on a network they work nicely together.
