Embarrassed to ask this but

  • After reading that other thread, it actually confused me. What is the difference between the profiling process and tone matching. Now I realize it's embarrassing so please keep ridicule to minimum

  • Tone matching / amp matching = eq matching.
DAW plugins like iZotope Ozone available since 20 years or more back can do eq matching by analyzing a sounds eq curve and apply that curve to another sound. It can't copy any dynamics from a sound, only the eq.

Profiling is unique to kemper and it analyzes the whole amp and speaker mic signal chain and captures the dynamics, feel, compression, attack, distortion, eq, interaction with power amp & cab, mic and other gear in the rig. So profiling captures everything in the amp + cab signal chain, including the eq match.

Plugins like ozone can also be used in the signal chain when profiling with the kemper to copy the eq of recorded guitar tracks to a profile.

History about eq matching with the Axe fx, what happened back then years before the kemper was released was that severeal Axe fx users already used eq tone matching inside their DAW for many years with plugins like Ozone and voxengo deconvolver and loaded those matched IR's into the Axe. It was a feature request for the Axe fx to do eq tone matching in similar way that DAW plugins have been capable of do since the 1990's.
It took several years for this to be implemented in the Axe fx and what caused much confusion for many users (and still do) was when Cliff (fractal CEO) said the misleading words "We will soon get our own profiling" to market his eq matching after that Kemper had already been released and become very popular. Since eq tone matching is not the same thing as profiling that the kemper can do, it was a weird behaviour from Cliff.

  • Ok so now I'll explain my understanding as it looks like I wasn't too far off.
tone matching is just copying waves and spitting back like a synthesizer recording an effect then playing it on different keys to correspond change in musical note/frequency.
profiling is tone matching PLUS capturing sonic signatures of different volumes to reproduce tone AND tonal dynamics

now how close am I and where can I improve on the understanding?

  • Profiling looks at the "flavor" of distortion that the amp produces, since different designs sound different in terms of what we usually call "bite", "crunch", and how they distort in different frequency ranges. Tone matching usually looks at the frequencies present in one signal (a guitar tone from an album, say) and applies EQ to make your amp's frequencies look the same.

    Here's an example: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7231524/tone match example.mp3

I recorded a direct take, then reamped it through two different profiles on my Kemper. The first is LL Shotgun Blast, which is a Peavey 6505 and a 1960 cabinet, and the second is LL Big Rock, a Mesa Rectifier and Mesa cabinet. I then loaded Voxengo Span (a free plugin, and very useful for all kinds of stuff), put an EQ on the Mesa track, and fiddled with the knobs until the two frequency curves in Span were as identical as I could get them.

As you can hear, even though the second track has been tone matched with the first, they sound nothing alike because those two amps have such different types of distortion. If you wanted to tone match with a sample of the guitars from In Flames' album Clayman, and you started with a profile of a 6505 and Mesa cabinet, your end result would be *much* closer because you'd be running nearly the same setup as what was used on the album.

  • The advantage of letting a plugin or a digital device do it is because it analyzes thousands of eq points. That kind of detail and precision is something that our ears are not capable of doing. Yes using a close similar amp setup is a must to get the different dynamic characteristics of the source sound.

  • WOW love this band thanks for sharing Happy Kemper. Recording is awesome might have to investigate in to that profile. Sorry to take the thread off subject

  • Awesome, I was literally just going to ask if you could profile a guitar stem from a DAW using the KPA... EXCELSIOR!
