Hello Chaps,
quick question. What is the best way to balance presents to set up for Footswitch usage ?
Just so many different presets and effects. All over the shop. Should I balance all via the volume knob or use boosts for clean sounds ?
How do you people solve this or is the answer just .....#volume know#
thanks in advance

Volume balance between presets

I wanted to have the options of using Kemper Factory Rigs without changing their volume, so:
The first thing I did was volume balance my main distortion sound to a similar Kemper Factory Rig, using Cabinet Volume. (my main distortion sound is a profile of my Jubilee).
Then, I volume balanced my main clean sound to a similar Kemper Factory Rig, also using Cabinet Volume.
Once I had my main two sounds volume balanced to Kemper Factory Sounds:
I volume balanced my main clean sound and my main distorted sound, using Clean Sense.
Since then, I use Cabinet Volume to balance my other clean sounds to the main clean sound.
I also use Cabinet Volume to balance all my other distorted (and not as distorted sounds) to my main distortion sound.

Is anybody using some kind of level monitoring tool to adjust the volume between different profiles?
Like the recording level in a DAW... -
+1 to paults method. The cab volume is the point. I dont touch the output volume knob.
You can also use the eq volume if you set an eq after the amp, but i prefer the cab volume.
I dont use distortion sense. Sometimes i use clean sense a little.cheers

I just turn the volume on the front up and down. When I first got my KPA I noticed some profiles that were really loud or quiet and the volume in the EQ/Cab volume were not at 0.

+1 to @'paults''s approach. Only difference is I use rig volume instead so I can see what's going on volume- wise at a glance.

Thanks a lot for the quick Feedback. What a great Forum

You're welcome!
BTW- using Ingolf's Rig Volume approach instead of Cabinet Volume works very well, too.

I too prefer to keep all the cabs' volumes @ 0, so I can swap them more consistently. The same for the Amp volume.
I see no reason to not use the rig volume and resave, this is the option that offers the highest consistency IMO. -
Some questions that fit this topic... (I hope... )
I'm struggling to find the same volume balance between different profiles.
In fact, direct out and monitor out both go in stereo to my Yams DXR12, and Main out in stereo to the FOH in our rehearsal room, which also provide a mix to the in-ears of our singer and drummer.
The main out to the FOH is set at - 17 dB, and is a fixed setting.
I used Reaper to monitor the input signal, to setup the profiles more or less at the same level, but our singer is still complaining that the levels are not the same in different songs/profiles.
By ear the level seems ok to me, at home on my Yamaha H80 monitors, and on the Yamaha DXR12...
Is there a method that can be used to verify the levels?
I must admit that my ears are not 100% anymore after 35 years of metal music high volume torture... -
There's no method superior to human perception to check levels.
I'd work with the singer on those patches again that he thinks are still uneven. -
Agree with all the above, I adjust my rigs with Cab volume at around -6 db , that's already pretty loud.
I use the inputs vu meter from my DAW and adjust by ear , it's more difficult with cleans and highly sensitive / dynamic profiles.
-
Since then, I use Cabinet Volume to balance my other clean sounds to the main clean sound.
I also use Cabinet Volume to balance all my other distorted (and not as distorted sounds) to my main distortion sound.
Same approach here!
Here my normal specification for Rigs that i Take in Browse as "Presets" (consider that in most cases the profiles are already perfect with Cab Volume at "0", this means that it is a good approach ;-):
- Master Analog, Jack Out @ -6dB = SPDIF @ 0
- RMS between -18 / -15 dB (meter on my DAW)
- Check Balance between Cabinet Volume & Clean Sense (Rig Volume always at "0")When I tweak Rig specific for Songs I use to take the above specification as a guideline, then lowering of 2-5 dB for Rhythm parts and raising of 2-5 dB for Solo parts. In this cases I use only Rig Volume to evidenziate that I'm going under or upper the medium/standard volumes!
