I present my new genre - Space country rock!

  • Oh, I tried a new trick to try and get the bass where I wanted it because I've been having such trouble I figured that the issue is it's really hard to judge the amount of flub in the bass, but I know the audible portion is much higher up and that's the bit I want to hear even on smaller speakers.

So knowing this I figured well that's the bit I want to mix so lets isolate it first, so I started out by high-passing it pretty heavily then mixed and balanced that level till I was happy with how loud it was in the mix, then I lowered the hi-pass and raised some bass emphasis in a pultec EQ till I had the low end where I wanted it with as much detail as I wanted.

I think the result is a step forward, but I'd be interested to hear you guys thoughts on that.

  • Obviously I can't comment on bass levels 'cause of the mono CrapMac ZeroBass™ speaker, brother, but I will share a trick with you.

Back in the day when I was actually making music, I used to walk around the room - off to the side, behind the monitors and lastly stand in the doorway, moving my head across the room's threshold and back out.

This helped me gauge bass levels a great deal. It's kinda like the opposite of headphones. IMHO headphones make it really-tricky to gauge what real-world levels will be, but this trick, well, did the trick for me.

    Nice job man.

  • Thanks good advice, makes sense, I’ll give it a try tomorrow and see if it will help. I really want to get a good grip on bass because it’s so important to the sounds that I enjoy the most.

  • I hear ya bro'.

The idea, in case it wasn't obvious, is to compare what you hear with what you'd expect to hear in normal social listening situations where one is seldom positioned in the sweet spot.

You might be over on the side of room, moving around it as you socialise or even listening from the next at times such as when you go to the toilet and so on.

You're looking for the cohesiveness of the mix overall. No harm in pumping reference tracks through the system first to get the hang of what to expect.

    HTH brother.

  • Nice one Per. That immediate stereo spread with the guitars panned hard left and right is nice here on my studio monitors in an optimal listening position... :thumbup:8)

hard to judge the amount of flub in the bass

Yep. And this is what I hear as well. Rather flub than clear bass. And as Nicky pointed out that piles up when you move out of the sweet spot. A bit too much flub / bass in there for me and compared to radio type reference tracks...
