The Forum's a Tight Ship Right Now, It Seems - Discuss

  • ...insider jokes. nothing wrong with that in general, but there are enough already.

...please help yourself to as much food as you like and safe journey.

Now, that IS tight and doesnt sound like Rock 'n' Roll at all. All right, its your house, its your rules. I have to respect this.

Food for thought, though: A forum without any kindof "human, nice, funny and likeable community" will be very precise, technical and on-topic. But: the only reason to post there is when somebody is in trouble, found a bug, a flaw, had a crash or any other problem. For the unexperienced it will look like the product in question is nothing but bugs and flaws and problems. This is true for so many support forums for boring products like computer parts and such.

  • My 2 Cents:
I think there's always a compromise possible between posting on topic without losing the human element and the off topic digression we've come to see here quite often recently (and unfortunately IMO).
This certainly requires some discipline from the people posting.
And while I'm certainly guilty of having been off topic more than once in the past (when the whole forum was a lot smaller and there were much less participants btw.) I very much try to keep focused on the topics now.
With a forum that has grown to a size that big as the Kemper forum has, without such discipline we would get only white noise of communication, and this is exactly what a few recent threads have become.
Therefore I fully support the admins' and mods' policy for more posting discipline.

if you believe that what you describe above is our idea of this forum you're wrong and you should re-read my post. as Don says, you're taking things out of context which was also my first thought reading your post. you're welcome to ask questions if you're not sure how to interpret a sentence. and maybe you should also take the time to explain what rock'n'roll is to you in this context because i'm not sure if i understand your reference.
ingolf is right in the sense that there always needs to be a compromise and i believe we have had a very good compromise going here for a long while. all we attempt is to retain the balance.

  • this might have been one of those times where shortening the quote (and thereby taking it out of context) wasn't the ideal thing to do.
just like I did with your post to illustrate my point

I get your point - in general. But not for those posts in question. Its perfectly true to reduce my post to this single sentence. Thats exactly how I feal. Kindof sad.

This last post of G String got many likes. You probably are doing the right thing for your forum. All the best.

    Ne travaillez jamais.

  • In answer to one of the statements made!
Maybe I'm dense, But make the search function way easier to use, I find it very confusing and can rarely find what I'm looking for

I agree, though this is a peripheral issue to the original post ...

  • Anybody ever look at "recent posts"?
Sometimes it looks like a zoo with all of the Monkey profile pics. :D

It looks like a slot machine at Vegas. Only with Monkey faces instead of fruit.

I have played it "The Kemper forum slot machine"....Just hit refresh and watch the right. I win a lot too. :D

Just busting your hang-lows Monkey. :D

  • This made my day :P

  • [Reaction to slot-machine joke removed]

Lastly, I'd like to make it clear that after I made the following statements on page 1...

Now that I've slept on it, my 2¢ worth is that in fact the mods do an admiral job; their occasional ruffling of feathers with sudden thread closures and "abrupt" or seemingly-insensitive comments (they're only human after all) doesn't, IMHO, constitute any sort of personal attack or judgement of us. They're only trying to do their jobs as best they can according to the "mission statement" as described by G String above.

I feel therefore that my raising of this topic for discussion was a waste of time, and I'm sorry about that, peeps.

... I added the suffix [SOLVED] to the thread's title, as I felt that G String spelled out the forum's purpose and the mods' M.O. pretty well, and I hoped that this might be the end of it, so to speak. Unfortunately (for me!), someone has removed the suffix (edited the title), and I dare not meddle with it again; it would seem to me to be belligerent to do so.

The point is that I didn't want to create a monster - just an opportunity for us to quickly "catch up" on how each other feels about things and get up to speed on what the mods had to say. A number of threads had been closed of late that "shocked" me when I'd suddenly learned of it, usually just as I was really enjoying the read. Some of the time my surprise quickly turned to frustration due to my having no clue as to why these closures occurred. I'd also hoped someone might clarify, "publicly" (thank you, G String and Don), the mods' position concerning pulling us into line when we stray too far or for too long off topic. They did this, so, again, I'd like to make clear that the OP is more than satisfied at this point.

    Thank you, all and sundry!

  • My nuts thank you Brother Skocz... hang on... D'Oh!

You know M_M it's just friendly smile :P this was just hell funny and instantly ignited my imagination - playing in Las Vegas casino and seeing your 5 avatars on slot machine, this would be 1 000 000 $ worth experience :P

  • I feel therefore that my raising of this topic for discussion was a waste of time, and I'm sorry about that, peeps.

I do not see it as wasted time. You reacted in a human way and always stayed by yourself. You did not offend anybody.
As you said, the mods also are human. Maybe one ore another will find at the end that the shot was to early.

I'm in a period of life in which I increasingly realize that nothing is a straight line. Laws and rules should not intended to supplant humanity.
There are usually pragmatic solutions for a compromise that is more viable as a victory in a conflict. For me it seems that you already found the key to understand that.

With this view in mind I think it was an important contribution. Even when we close now this discussion.
There was no solution, there was only a chance to understand another.

  • looking at the recent posts, just over night, this thread just became a pretty good example of what we would like to avoid. if this would be any other thread i probably wouldn't have written this particular comment. but since we discuss *exactly this* in here, it serves as a good example.

  • Are there forum rules to read or will they reformulated at appropriate occasions. ?

    ;)
the point being, that it's not just about following rules, it's about understanding what purpose this forum serves, respecting other members' & especially newbies' needs (easily found information and answers) as well as and the information presented here itself - and acting accordingly.
