What gear did you get in 2016? Any plans for 2017?

  • Thought it would be fun to see who got what gear (instruments, sound sculptors, controllers, software, etc) people were getting in 2016. I want to hear all about it, the big stuff, the little stuff, the stuff you can't live without, the stuff you're going to smash into a zillion pieces...

Also give it a rating out of 10 for fun!

I had a pretty good year, gear-wise, lots of great acquisitions that have integrated well into my setup and studio.

    1) Roland TD30 8.5/10
    2) Trick Bigfoot double bass pedal 8.5/10
    3) Avantone Mixcube 8/10
    4) Gordius Big Little Giant midi controller 9/10
    5) Fishman Triple Play 7.5/10
    6) Yamaha Motif Rack XS 8/10
    7) Akai MPC1000 9/10
    8) Perc Pro Drum Robots 8/10
    9) Moog MF-101 Low Pass Filter 7/10
    10) Logic Pro X 8/10
    11) Izotope Music Production Bundle 8/10
    12) BFD3 8/10
    13) Behringer X-AIR12 Digital Mixer 8/10
    14) Presonus Monitor Station 8/10
    15) SE Electronics 2200II Microphone 7.5/10
    16) Source Audio Reflex Expression Pedal 7/10
    17) Muztek Pedalboard 9/10
    18) Isoacoustics Monitor Stands 8/10

Think that's everything. A lot of 7s and 8s out of 10, I based the scale on a Kemper being a 10. Everybody try and be realistic, and in case I was unfair with my rating of anything, let me know!

Plans for 2017 include getting a new guitar and a Darkglass B7K Ultra :)

2016 is dead! It's a wonder how I fed myself! Long live 2016!

  • 1) Roland TD30 8/10
    2) Sire Marcus Miller V7 bass 10/10
    3)Tech21 SansAmp RBI 8.5/10
    4) G&L Legacy Special Strat 10/10
    5) Sigma DRC-41E 8.5/10
    6) a couple of VSTIs, on average 7/10 :(
    7) a few VST plugins, on average 8.5/10
    8 ) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV 8.5/10
    9) a couple of Walimex Pro VDSLR lenses 10/10
    10) a truckload of SSD drives 10/10

and a lot more which is of less importance.
My ranking is mostly based on value for money, not on quality only.

I had planned to buy Spectrasonics Keyscape but their licence model is absolutely ridiculous. Can't use it in my studio for and with my clients. So I decided not to throw any money at this company. Big disappointment of 2016 for me.

    Plans for 2017:
    third Profiler
    a cigar box guitar
Woody, my custom built Les Paul to be finished by the luthier

    long term plans:
a custom made driftwood guitar (Strat or Jaguar or Firebird style)
    a Gigliotti GT Custom Telecaster

  • When you do the 8 ) (without the space), to avoid the emoticon, some of us add a . after like this: 8). and then highlight the dot and alter it's "font color" (the A icon) and choose the white color.

I like your ratings idea (x/10) and wish I did that with my post.

I'd give my Motiff a 9/10 because most of it's sound banks, even if dated compared to some companies like EW, sound very realistic in a mix. I did a saxophone and even I can't tell it's fake (and I used to play one) It's got awesome pianos and synths.

Btw, I think it should be mentioned that 8.5/10 for Roland makes sense compared to real drumming. But compared to other VDrum products out there, Roland is King.

  • That Marcus Miller bass sounds really good. Why do you need a third profiler?

  • Btw, I think it should be mentioned that 8.5/10 for Roland makes sense compared to real drumming. But compared to other VDrum products out there, Roland is King.

I agree that Roland is king for eDrums. My relatively low rating ( 8/10 ) is based on a few pretty serious flaws I've experienced:
    a. No symmetrical outputs
    b. It's very annoying that all changes to a specific kit get stored immediately (on the fly). Not a problem when you're the sole user but when using in a studio where many drummers go through the kits and fiddle around, you never stop making and loading backups. You simply can't keep e.g. 20 kits of 20 different drummers ready to be used when they hit the studio again. Without heavy pendrive use you're likely lost in no time.
    c. The Direct Outs aren't exactly "direct" at all. If the drummer changes compression and/or EQ and/or mixer levels, these changes will affect the Direct Outs as well.

I have no idea if these issues have been changed/fixed in the new TD50 but this new module isn't an option as long as my nice cow avatar doesn't convert into a cash cow ;)

  • Well, let's see:

    In 2016 I got:
    - Kemper Powerrack, 10/10 (in addition to my powerhead)
    - Fender Mustang III V2, 9/10, a fun thing to play, no contest to the Kempers of course)
    - Digitech Trio +, 9/10, great fun.
    - Gretsch G5422 Electromatic, 9/10, great guitar.
    - 2x Line 6 Relay G10, 10/10
    - Slate Raven MTI 2, 10/10, enhances my studio workflow greatly
    - Apogee Jam, 7/10, my second one, first one died a sudden death.
    - Studio One V3, 8/10, great DAW, still I prefer Logic
    - Harrison Mixbus V3, no verdict yet, I'll try this als an alternative to mixing instead of Logicü
    - 2x KRK RP5 RoKit G3, 9/10, second pair of nearfields to complement my Yamaha HS 80's
    - several Plugins,
    - like the Slate everything bundle, 10/10,
    - Sonarworks headphone calibration plugin 10/10
    - Izotope Neutron 10/10

    - Palmer Monicon L or Mackie Big Knob for my studio.

  • Hahaha, keep it coming gearheads! We make the music(al instrument) world go round, no doubt!

I got to add to my list, this just came into the shop and they called me, so I couldn't resist.

Audio technical ATH 50x Headphones, superb
    Ableton Live Suite
    Ableton Push II
its so much fun and inspiring this Ableton Stuff
    everybody should get this Package

  • Hahaha, I love how the list expanded from two items to 12!

    Happy New Year, @Jimmyno!

  • The Kemper has cured most of my GAS. I guess new profiles might qualify. Several added from MBritt and Guido. (Isn't that like buying amps?)
    ^^

A used Macbook Pro, Retina model, i7 (mid-2011) to use with my Fishman Tripleplay.
I'm impressed (I wish I had had Garageband in the 70s) and would like to switch to Mac in the future depending on if Apple has
any desire to continue listening to musicians' needs. Apple seems to be veering away with each new OS release "breaking" the current audio hardware. I'll save money for a potential iMac and make a decision later.

My 1987 Japanese Squier Stratocaster originally came with tiny, vintage style frets and a plastic nut.
I had a bone nut installed and had it refretted with tall frets.

Wow. It plays 100% better and the bone nut has better tone. The action
is also really great...the guy who installed the nut was able to keep it
low profile like the original. Sometimes the little things make all the difference

A Cordoba Orchestra CE model with spruce top. I find myself playing this nylon string guitar a lot at home.

The key to everything is patience.

  • I'd give my Motiff a 9/10

Agreed, db. I thought AJ's 8/10 rating was a little harsh. I was hoping he'd have loved it more seeing as I highly recommended he purchase it...

    AJ, wassup wit' dat, brah?

All you guys with good health and jobs... I can barely stand reading all your acquisitions! Man, it's like Hog Heaven™ imagining the sheer pace of purchasing you do. I sure hope you all appreciate the positions you're in! 8o
